PLEASE HELP!!! Factor completely x^2 + 20x − 36.

OpenStudy (ckallerid):

Do you know how to split this into a binomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was going to say (x+2)(x+18)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But there is a minus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then what would it be?

Nnesha (nnesha):

check your equation plz

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that was the equation given to me one of my answers is prime, is that the answer?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Orime would be correct

Nnesha (nnesha):

use the discriminant b^2 - 4ac

pooja195 (pooja195):

*Prime there are no numbers that multiply to -36 but add to make 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks :)

pooja195 (pooja195):

ax^2+bx+c=0 x^2 + 20x − 36. a*c <----36 x 1 =-36 b <----20

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are trying to factor a trinomial of the form: \(x^2 + ax + b\) For this type of factoring, you need to find two numbers whose product is b and whose sum is a. In this case, you need two numbers whose product is -36 and whose sum is 20. If two such numbers do not exist, then the trinomial is not factorable, so it's prime.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

Nnesha (nnesha):

nvm

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Factors of -36 Sum of the factors -1, 36 35 -36, 1 -35 -18, 2 -16 -2, 18 16 -12, 3 -9 -3, 12 9 -9, 4 -5 -4, 9 5 -6, 6 0 As you can see, there are no two factors of -36 which have a sum of 20. That means this trinomial is not factorable. it is prime.
