letter grade in algebra (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous 2. tax bracket (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous 3. political party (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous 4. color of car (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous 5. length of a caterpillar (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is this

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Statistics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That Explains why my brain just exploded

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

I'm so confused :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

U made Me confused

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Do you know any who could help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ummmmmm @pooja165

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

@mathstudent55 can you help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea they seem smart

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

@mathmate

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

@jim_thompson5910 please please please

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The instructions are missing, but I'm assuming they want you to identify the type of variable? That's what it looks like

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

yes

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

I think number 1 is A?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

letter grade in algebra (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous think about what types of grades are possible: A,B,C,D,F now think to yourself: does it make sense to order these? The answer is yes because A comes before B, B before C, etc. Put another way, A has a higher "value" than B. B is higher than C, etc. This all means grades are ordinal. The grades are qualitative because they aren't numeric values. If they were numeric values that you could do math on, then it would be quantitative

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`I think number 1 is A? ` yeah I agree

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Number 2, D?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If it were continuous, you'd have a spectrum instead of a few tax brackets. That would make the tax code probably more complicated Since there are only a few tax brackets, we have discrete data. When something is discrete, it is countable. You can list all of the elements and it doesn't go onto infinity

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Ex of a discrete set: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} ex of a continuous set: the set of all real numbers

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

So, is number 2 C?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Is number 3 B or D?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what are some of the political parties out there? Can you list them out and not go off to infinity? Can you do math on the elements in this set?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Also, does it make sense to order the political parties?

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

Wait, is 3 A?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

does it make sense to order the political parties? Assume you aren't biased towards any one party

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I guess you could order based on the political spectrum (democrats on left, republicans on right) but there are many parties than just those two. So it doesn't make much sense to order them. In this case, the data is nominal nominal means "name" more or less. The data is just a bunch of name labels

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

So, B?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

I think 4 is A

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The colors could be sorted alphabetically, or by the color spectrum. However, ordering the colors doesn't seem to make sense. So it's very similar to the previous question

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

So, a?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

look back at #3

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

is 4 c?

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

and is 5 D?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

5. length of a caterpillar (1 point) qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous since we're able to measure the length of the caterpillar, and that length is numeric, it is quantitative. It's possible to have lengths like 1.2 cm or 1.12 cm or 1.102 cm. The possibilities are endless in terms of how precise we get. There are infinitely many numeric values possible. So this data is also continuous. Think of a number line

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so I agree with you. It is D

OpenStudy (xximhisgirlxx):

is 4 c?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no, colors are qualitative and nominal qualitative because you can't do numeric operations on "red", "green", etc nominal because the colors are just labels
