The lengths of two sides of a triangle are 14 inches and 4 inches. Which of the following dimensions is the third side of this triangle? 10 inches 11 inches 8 inches 9 inches

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

On the other problem, it os 36 percent because o forgot to tell you to subtract it by 100 percent because it is NOT in the shaded

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK so its 36%

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! :)

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

Is there a picture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

It cannot be 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

The sum of two sides of a triangle has to be bigger than the other side. It can't be equal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

Is one of them the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean?

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

Or... Is it a right triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

triangle it says

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

It think it is 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, what do you think? @jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

Yes. It is 11 because 11+4 is greater than 14

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let x be the third unknown side 14-4 = 10 14+4 = 18 the third side x must satisfy this inequality 10 < x < 18 for a triangle to be possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK i will go with 11

OpenStudy (plasmataco):

The numbers only go up to 11 so it can only be 11 for it cannot. Be 10 in which it would make a strait line
