ALGEBRA II HELP : Simplify i^38

OpenStudy (steve816):

SImply divide the exponent by 4, and find the remainder. In this case, the remainder is 2, and is the same is i^2 so the answer is just -1!

OpenStudy (steve816):

Do you see what I did there my friend?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

why would you divide the exponent by 4?

OpenStudy (steve816):

because my teacher told me.

Nnesha (nnesha):

hahah very good answer. :p

OpenStudy (steve816):

I'm KIDDING WITH YOU!!! Because it is pretty much a cycle. Every 4th power it just goes back to i, so you want to divide by 4 and find the remainder, and that is the real exponent that you should use.

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

ok, thanks!

Nnesha (nnesha):

bec it's cycle |dw:1440198277504:dw| after i^4 repeat the patteerrn
