Despite the U.S. victory and its gain of land, there were several long-term costs of the Mexican-American War war:

25,000 Mexicans and 12,700 Americans lost their lives. Many died of disease.
Mexico lost more than half its territory. U.S. citizens have found great wealth in these areas.
The gain of land increased conflict within the United States over the issue of slavery. Americans argued bitterly over whether to allow slavery in the new territories.
Mexico demanded payment for losses from Native American raids. The U.S. needed mountain-free land to build a railroad. To solve both problems, the U.S. purchased additional land from Mexico under the Gadsden Purchase in 1853.

Heres my notes to go along with the maps , they said use those to help with the first question:

1783- U.s extended from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River

1803- U.S. purchased Louisiana territory from France

1819- Western part of Florida was annexed, or taken possession of by the U.S. The eastern part was given during the Adam - Onis treaty.

1845- Texas was annexed, which led to the Mexican War.

1848- The southwest part of the U.S. was ceded by mexico following the Mexican- American war.

The border differences of the maps show is the U.S. expanding! In 1783 the U.S. map expands to the Mississippi river. In 1803 the U.S. map expanded over the Louisiana territory because they purchased it from France. In 1819 the U.S. map expanded to the western part of Florida, later the eastern part of Florida was given during the Adam - Onis treaty. In 1845 Texas was annexed, which led to the Mexican War and the famous phrase, "Remember the Alamo." This again caused the U.S. territory to expand into the north part of Texas. In 1849 the southern part of Texas wanted to leave Mexico and join America, which lead to the American-Mexican war, and the U.S. won, which again lead the U.S. territory and map to expanded into now known Texas.

Besides land the United States gained resources from expansion. In the 1783 expansion the U.S. gained gold, oil and coal. In 1803 the U.S. gained a lot more gold, some oil and coal. The 1819 expansion of the U.S. gained no notable resources. (At least the map doesn't show Florida having anything.) In the 1845 expansion coal and oil were gained, this being the same in 1848. (Coal and oil were gained.)

Besides land the United States had gained resources and materials from the expansion. Materials such as Coal, Gold, and Oil. They received Gold from California due to the California gold rush. They received oil from Texas and other states near it. Coal came from the North East and allowed for industrialization. This is what the United States gained other than land

i personally believe so in the fact that it was a time of conflicts around the globe and with the Mexican empire being so new, if it were just ignored then it would have taken even further hostilities and other smaller nations would have seen the U.S. as open game to mess with.
