OpenStudy (tiff9702):

A recipe that makes 6 servings calls for 1/2 cup of butter. Nancy modifies the recipe so that it can serve 8. How many cups of butter does Nancy need?

OpenStudy (radar):

First get an idea about then answer. can you agree that it is going to take ore 1/2 cup to serve 8 compared to serving 6?

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

Yes

OpenStudy (radar):

Good, are you studying ratio and proportions now?

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

no

OpenStudy (radar):

Do you know about ratio and proportions?

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

Ratio yes the other no

OpenStudy (radar):

O.K. Thats enough. The ratio for the number of servings is 8 to 6 or 8/6 which further reduces to 4/3. Do you follow that? In other words the amount of butter will need to increase by that ratio.

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

i know

OpenStudy (radar):

To figure out what that is, take the amount of butter needed for 6 and multiply it by 4/3 to get the amount of butter for 8.

OpenStudy (radar):

And remember it should be larger than 1/2.

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

I got 8

OpenStudy (radar):

that would look like this 1/2 X 4/3 = ??

OpenStudy (radar):

Thats larger for sure, bu that is too much butter.

OpenStudy (tiff9702):

Answer: = 2/3

OpenStudy (radar):

8 is the number of servings that she is preparing for. For 6 she needed 1/2 cup, for 8 she needs more but less than 8 cups! Absolutely 2/3 cup of butter is good.
