⦁ Please help me!! Which of these are examples of physical properties? Be able to defend your answers. A brown dog- A melting ice cube- A burning campfire- A bendable straw- A rusty nail-

Can you pick more than 1?

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

yes

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

and i have to explain why an why not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, do you have any idea which ones it might be? Hint: there's more than one

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

melting ice burning campfire

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, melting ice is correct, that is a physical change. Do you know why?

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

no i dont

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, ice is just solid water, right? Frozen H2O. So basically, when you melt ice, you're just turning a solid into a liquid. Solid/liquid/gas are all a physical state of being. The chemical properties are the still same.

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

ohhhhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, burning a campfire, that would have to be chemical. There's one more physical one. The signs of a chemical change are a change in color, formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, odor change and temperature change. Try again keeping this in mind

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

a rusty nail

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rust is definitely a chemical change. It's a chemical reaction to iron and steel reacting to water and oxygen over a long period of time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, I'd actually say there are two other examples of physical properties besides a melting ice cube

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

well is it a brown dog

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

ohhh and bendable straw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Do you understand why? Bending a straw changes absolutely nothing about the chemical composition of the straw, you're simply changing its /physical/ state. Now, if you had said that the dog's color changed, that would be chemical. But since it's not, the color of the dog is just one of its physical properties

OpenStudy (parissfrance09):

okay thank you so so so so so so so so so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :) happy to help
