OpenStudy (mustap):

I need some help with a poem. If anyone is good at Simile's, Metaphors and figurative language etc your help would be much appreciated here. Here's the requirements for my paper: Write an essay in which you analyze the figurative language in a poem from this unit. • State which poem you chose, and explain why you chose it. • Identify a key metaphor, simile, or other example of figurative language in the poem. Explain why this figurative language is important to the poem’s meaning. • Analyze the meaning of the figurative language. Explain your analysis clearly. • Explain how the figurative language contributes to the tone of the poem. For example, explain how the poet’s word choices build or maintain a sense of formality or informality. Cite details to support your ideas. • Edit your essay for correct punctuation and spelling. I understand how to do most of this but I need a little bit of help. The poem I chose was "I Hear America Singing" http://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/i-hear-america-singing

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

So what exactly do you need help with?

OpenStudy (mustap):

I can't properly choose a key metaphor or simile that's important to the poems meaning. I just can't get the hang of figurative language for some reason.

OpenStudy (mustap):

@pooja195 could you help me out with this?

OpenStudy (louloubelle00):

Is this what you are needing help with?

OpenStudy (mustap):

Yes it is @Louloubelle00 Sorry for leaving for a bit.

OpenStudy (louloubelle00):

give me a minute i have to actually think about this lol

OpenStudy (mustap):

Sure that's fine. I'm trying to put something together as well.

OpenStudy (louloubelle00):

this one is a lot more in depth thats why im slightly stumped haha

OpenStudy (mustap):

That's fine. I have the whole day to do this.

OpenStudy (mustap):

I'm kinda figuring it out as I go.

OpenStudy (mustap):

I'll leave and come back in a bit to see if anyone's answered. I gotta go

OpenStudy (louloubelle00):

thats good! Sorry my brain is just on overload

OpenStudy (louloubelle00):

bye :)

OpenStudy (mustap):

@hero can you help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well a smilie would be "He is brave AS a lion" the man is not a lion but he is so brave that eventually he can be compared to a lion. A metaphor is something a bit more complicated but let me give you an example "freddie is a pig when he eats" now is freddy really a pig? NO! it is just a comparison based on certain details about him. I read the poem and honestly I dont think that the author used similies or metaphors

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The whole poem is a metaphor. The poet/speaker (mustn't confuse the two) can't actually hear America singing. Try going over why the speaker is using the metaphor of singing, as opposed to whatever else it could be doing.
