The movement between phases of state of matter (solid, liquid, gas) has to do with the kinetic energy of the atoms of the substance. The faster particles move, the more forcefully they collide with one another and the larger the average distance between them becomes - hence gas particles have the largest kinetic energies, while solids have the lowest.
