OpenStudy (diamondboy):

Hi

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

Do u understand what u are asked and how far have u gone?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok! This isn't so bad, it just requires doing one subtraction per molecule. So if we look at that first list, we have H-Cl, then H-F right? So what we do is we look up H and Cl in the chart and get the numbers: 2.2 for H and 3.16 for Cl. Now subtract the smaller number from the bigger number, 3.16-2.2 = 0.96 Do the same thing for H-F, look up the numbers, do the subtraction and you will get 1.8 (check it) Now we take these values which are the bond polarities of the molecules and compare them by plugging them in, H-Cl < H-F will be .96 < 1.8 which is a true statement, so this part is right. Keep going and compare all the bonds. It will be easier if you are familiar with periodic table trends especially at the top right section is usually where most of your atoms will be found when doing organic chemistry. http://www.chemhume.co.uk/ASCHEM/Unit%201/Ch3IMF/Images%203/electronegativity_values.jpg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, I think B but could you tell me? If I get it wrong my gpa goes down and I'm locked out of my quiz @Woodward

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

ok

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

H-F is more electronegative than them all

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

can u guess what d first one is.....because electronegativity increases across d period from left to right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue, I just feel like B sounds right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Woodward is there another way you can explain?

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

So we said electronegativity increases from left to right on d period of d periodic table

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

having that in mind H-F is greater than H-O>H-Cl>HS

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

so what is your answer @WhatEven

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C?

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

what is the meaning of this "<"

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought less than but I'm soooooo confused now

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

ok relax...it means less than

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

the answer is the final option

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

so H-F<H-O<H-Cl<H-S

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That was wrong ;-;

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It said "NO"

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

if < means less than then thats d answer but if it means greater than then B is the answer

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

do u still have one more try?

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

Please I am sorry...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No sorry it was my last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll get it unlocked tomorrow though and tag you

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

would probably try too get an answer before tomorrow. Thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can I still tag you tomorrow?

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (diamondboy):

Thank God :)
