OpenStudy (tennistar):

How do you find the slope and y-intercept of this graph? (Graph posted in comments)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

link doesn't work, maybe try posting a screenshot?

OpenStudy (tennistar):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Where on the y axis does the graph cross?

OpenStudy (tennistar):

It appears a little bit past -1?

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Wait

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Is it -4?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the y intercept is -4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

making b = -4

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Ahhh...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

can you identify 2 points on this line?

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Yes...-1, -1 and -2, 2 I think.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, make sure you use parenthesis when talking about points so instead of `-1,-1` say `(-1,-1)`

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Then I just plug them in for rise over run formula, correct?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah tell me what you get

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Ok

OpenStudy (tennistar):

-3 I believe

OpenStudy (tennistar):

For the slope

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes -3/1 = -3 is your slope

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

m = -3 is the slope b = -4 is the y intercept

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Ok, thank you so much :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plug those into y = mx+b

OpenStudy (tennistar):

Ok, thanks :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no problem
