Coding in python. What does \(x\leftrightarrow y\) mean in coding talk?

x <> y mean 'not equal to' in some languages

It is code for a sorting algorithm on the vertices of a graph.

The find function and union functions connect everything in some component to a single vertex, and the book has the following code, but I am starting to thing it is pseudo code.

In terms of what it is doing, it is "attaching vertices" but I am asking if this is some pointer built into the language.
