MEDAL WILL BE GIVEN. In the following lines from Beowulf, what literary technique has the poet used in the underlined words? To many it seemed the wolf-of-the-waves had won his life synecdoche epithet kenning litotes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An interesting question, and a difficult one. Is wolf-of-the-waves underlined?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I'm sorry I should have put it in parenthesis or something. I tried looking up the definitions to each literary technique, but I just can't get it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright then. This is a kenning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A kenning is a group of words, typically using figurative language, that center around one idea. It was commonly used by Old Norse, and later Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon poets. For instance, an Old Norse poet might replace the regular word for “sword”, with a more abstract compound such as “wound-hoe”

I don't think you realize just how much I love you right now. xD Thank you so so much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So in this case, wolf-of-the-waves might mean something like pirate, or just a great seaman.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've got another one I still don't know the answer to though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. Anytime! Good luck. ^^
