A pogo stick has a spring with a spring constant of 2.50 x 104 N/m, which can be compressed 12.0 cm. To what maximum height (in meters) can a child jump on the stick using only the energy in the spring, if the child and stick have a total mass of 40kg. Assume air resistance is negligible and take g as 9.8 m/s2

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

here we can apply the conservation of energy, namely the potential energy gained by the child when he reached the maximum height, has to be equal to the potential energy stored by the spring. So we can write this: \[\Large \frac{1}{2}k{\delta ^2} = mg{h_{MAX}}\] where \(m\) is the total mass, \(k\) is the spring constant, \(\delta\) is the compression, and, as usual, \(g\) is the gravity

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

we can assume that the mass of the spring is negligible
