I have a test tomorrow and its over rate time and distance. If someone could just explain one problem to me I might get the rest! The question is in the comments! Please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two jets leave Denver at 9:00 am one flying east at a speed 50 km/h greater than the other which is traveling west. at 11:00 am the planes are 2500 km apart. find their speeds. (I need the rate x time = distance chart as well as the answer)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need a variable for the speed how about R for "rate"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i should be more precise' how about \(R\) for the rate of the slower plane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the faster plane will then have a speed of \(R+50\) because it is going 50 mph faster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in two hours they are 2500 miles apart since distance is rate times time the slower plane travelled \(2R\) miles and the faster one \(2(R+50)=2R+00\) miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since the total is \(2500\) you know \[2R+2R+100=2500\] and you can solve that for \(R\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait where did you get the 2 from??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

two hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from 9 to 11 is two hours, so the time is \(2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go R miles per hour for two hours distance is \(2R\)

Oh I see! so |dw:1446692215114:dw| is that correct?
