what would be a charge for an ion which has gained three electons?

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

For starters, all elements are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its asking to write it correctly though?

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

I'm going to get to that part in a bit. do you get this so far?> |dw:1448247001778:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

my question to you is, does the atom have more electrons than protons? and how do you know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know anything about the atom the question doesn't specify

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

remember @daniellamontanez the number of protons always equals the number of electrons so the net charge would be 0 Take the example below. If i have an element with 3 electrons, I know that it has three protons. for any element the net charge when we add up the number of protons and neutrons is going to be zero. |dw:1448247239178:dw| but if I added 3 electrons. the net charge would be -3 can you see why?
