OpenStudy (yuliacosta111):

Gareth believes that if he flips a coin 820 times, it will land heads up exactly 410 times. What would you tell Gareth about his prediction?

OpenStudy (smartanne):

I can help

OpenStudy (yuliacosta111):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

his prediction would be wrong and what r the answer choices

OpenStudy (yuliacosta111):

its an essay question

OpenStudy (smartanne):

Gareth's prediction would be wrong because there is a equal probability of the coin landing heads up every single time, or landing tails up every single time

OpenStudy (smartanne):

Medal if this helped ;)....let me know if you need further explanation

OpenStudy (mrnood):

@Smartanne that is not the reason WHY he is wrong

OpenStudy (smartanne):

ok....

OpenStudy (yuliacosta111):

than what is

OpenStudy (mrnood):

well - there is an equal chance of h/t each throw that means that there is just a chance that (for instance) he will throw 820 heads (this is an infinitesimally small chance - but it still exists) The distribution of probability is bigger as you get to 420 heads, but ANY combination of 820 heads or tails has a finite possibility, therefore he cannot be confident that exactly 410 heads will occur

OpenStudy (yuliacosta111):

thxs

OpenStudy (mrnood):

I have just looked up the probability it is only about 2.8% chance that exactly 410 heads will be thrown !!
