I would say approval from someone in charge because the first sentence starts off about being christened along with other babies and it sounds like an ordinary everyday life of someone coming up to another person who has some authority over them, asking for something, and that authority chastising them for whatever it is they asked for but then after some talk for a while this specific authority decides to give the approval or "blessing" to go and do or get whatever was asked for.
