The south was devastated. The infrastructure had been destroyed. (bridges, railroads, mills, all major cities in ruins.) Union Gen. Sherman's march to the sea, burned everything in it's path. The slave labor that had built the huge plantations was no longer free labor.. They had no political representation in congress, and they were ruled by military commanders bent on revenge. Most of the valuable farm land and once beautiful estates, were seized by the military governors and sold to northern business concerns or friends of the governors. They were sold for pennies on the dollar of their actual worth. They were impoverished for many years after the war, and did not have representation in congress until 1885. The south was to be punished severely for many years to come
