What does this mean?? "In 1852, John Henry Newman wrote in The Idea of A University that true learning "consists, not merely in the passive reception into the mind of a number of ideas hitherto unknown to it"
Someone help me interpret this in plain english.. The word hitherto threw me off.. Google defined it as "Up until a certain point in time."
hitherto (HAH google is grandpa dictionary sometimes.)
The definition itself was confusing for sure but, when I applied the definition into the sentence, it didn't make any sense to me..
