OpenStudy (df001):

What does this mean?? "In 1852, John Henry Newman wrote in The Idea of A University that true learning "consists, not merely in the passive reception into the mind of a number of ideas hitherto unknown to it"

OpenStudy (df001):

Someone help me interpret this in plain english.. The word hitherto threw me off.. Google defined it as "Up until a certain point in time."

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

hitherto (HAH google is grandpa dictionary sometimes.)

OpenStudy (df001):

The definition itself was confusing for sure but, when I applied the definition into the sentence, it didn't make any sense to me..

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@DF001 I'll translate it: learning is made up of, not only in the non-responsive receiving of a number of ideas to the mind; that were previously not known. :) you got this one.

OpenStudy (df001):

oh thanks that made much more sense!

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

Lol, you're welcome! :)

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

Oh, thanks for the medal. I was just helping :)

OpenStudy (df001):

thank you lol

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@DF001 You're welcome! =)
