OpenStudy (anonymous):

please someone help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Distribute 4(3x - 5) + 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your job is to take \[3(4x-5)+6\] , distribute, and then combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first step is what @ShadowLegendX said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what he/she is talking about "distribute" it means multiply both terms inside the parentheses by 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually i wrote it wrong, it is \[4(3x-5)+6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got that or no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lets go slow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is \(4\times 3x\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, \(4\times 3=12\) but what about the \(x\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did it go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4\times 3x=?\] the \(x\) should be in your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

waht to you mean the x should be in my answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4\times 3\diamondsuit =12\diamondsuit\]\[4\times 3x=?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, it is not 12, it is \(12x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is why i asked where the \(x\) went

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now how about \(4\times (-5)\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, not 19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get it? \[4\times(-5)\] contains one minus sign, for we know the answer is negative, not positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what? but how you said t has a minus sighn how is it negitiv if it has a minus sighn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am not sure how to answer that is \(-50\) positive or negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

positiv

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you said its a minus sighn so its minus 50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wich is 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sory if i sound stupid :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minus fifty is not zero it if is minus fifty degrees, it is much colder than 0 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if a number has a minus sign in front of it, it is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and when you multiply two numbers together, if one of them is negative (has a minus sign in front) then the answer is negative as well (has a minus sign in front)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for example \[2\times (-4)=-8\] since \(2\times 4=8\) and there is one minus sign there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now lets try again we have to compute \(4\times (-5)\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm i think what you mean is that \(4-5=-1\) right? what is \(4\times 5\)? forget about the minus sign for a second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so \[4\times 5=?\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that makes \[4\times (-5)=-20\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we have distributed the 4 in \(4(3x-5)\) by multiplying each term by 4 to get \[4(3x-5)=12x-20\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we actually have \[4(3x-5)+6\] so now that is \[12x-20+6\] what is \(-20+6\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait 12 - 20 is 12 and 20+6 is 26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is no 12 there, that is, there is not term that is just 12 there is a \(12x\) which does not combine with the two numbers the two numbers are \(-20\) and \(+6\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but you said 12 - 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the question is now, what is \(-20+6\) or if you prefer \(6-20\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where do you see \(12-20\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh yes it does say \[\huge 12\color{red}x-20+6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the \(\color{red}x\) is a variable, it is not the number 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\huge 12\color{red}x\overbrace{-20+6}^{\text{combine these two numbers}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

26?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if x is a varibalbe then why did you put hte 12 there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no \(20+6=26\) but you have \(-20+6\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 12 was because \(4\times 3x=12x\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now we are back to "what is \(-20+6\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw the number in front of the variable is called the "coefficient" \(12x\) means \(12\times x\) you just don't write the \(\times \) symbol for example of \(x\) was $100 then \(12x\) would be $1200

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so finally what is minus twenty plus six?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope if you spent twenty dollars, and then got a 6 dollar rebate, how much would you really have spent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know what rebate means

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got $6 back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know the rules for adding "signed numbers"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like \(-10+3\) or \(-5-4\) or \(12-18\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then you cannot do a problem like this you need to be able do add and subtract before algebra, also know the distributive property, and what a variable is this kind of question should come after you learn those things i can tell you briefly what the rules are, but it takes quite a bit of practice to understand them and know how to use them quickly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute and combine like terms :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the problem here is that when we finally distribute and combine like terms, you are going to have to do it four more times, for each of your possible answers then see which ones give you the same thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Alknowsall yes, we have been doing that for a while now, and have not gotten their yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MariahDimond i am not being critical, i am only saying that it is impossible to do algebra without knowing the basics of arithmetic if that is still not clear, work on that first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true hahaha @satellite73

pooja195 (pooja195):

|dw:1450584485393:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but we are stuck at the addition step here \(-20+6\)

pooja195 (pooja195):

lol oops you can flip it and do 6-20= ? if that helps

pooja195 (pooja195):

@MariahDimond 6-20=? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean

pooja195 (pooja195):

6 minus 20 =?

pooja195 (pooja195):

I took what @satellite73 wrote -20+6 and flipped it to make 6-20 both have the same answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-26? minus is negitiv isent it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait does this mean im stupid

pooja195 (pooja195):

Ok let's try using a number line |dw:1450584789386:dw|

pooja195 (pooja195):

Basically you count up from -20 so count 6 spaces up what number are you at?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

pooja195 (pooja195):

What number do you get?
