Can someone show the steps to solve this? Thank you :)
Problem: 3y − 7 = y + 5

Do you not know the steps?
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
I think I do. I'm lost on the part when you have to switch the 3y or the y value to the opposite side.
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
I don't know which side to work on first.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
First we need to add 7 to both sides.
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
Giving us: 3y = y +12

Then we subtract 'y' from both sides giving us...? I'm not sure about this part. Does the 'y' cancel out?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
We need to simplify y
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
How?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Subtract y from both sides like you said :)
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
Okay, and what does that give me? Does that cancel the 'y' variable out leaving only a 3? or does the 3 become 2y??

It becomes 2y because we need a variable in order to break down the equation into one integer
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
Aaahhhh, okay! So from there, I divide 2 by 12 and y = 6 :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Correct! :)
OpenStudy (seb.cal):
Thanks for your help :)

You're welcome young jedi :)
