Inference - a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. So like, if you see a monkey eating a banana, you might infer that he is hungry, thus he eats the banana to sate his hunger.

The setting is the environment in which a story or event takes place. Setting can include specific information about time and place. So like a setting would be....OpenStudy Mathematics chatroom...at 3am ;)
Characterization is the concept of creating characters for a narrative. It is a literary element and may be employed in dramatic works of art or everyday conversation. Characters may be presented by means of description, through their actions, speech, thoughts and interactions with other characters. This is pretty simple to understand

Plot is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story or the main part of a story. So setting helps provide the place and the time, while characterization provides the characters for that setting.
Together they help create the events that occur in a story. Setting is important as this is where the events will happen. Will it be in a place of hardship such as a desert or an isolated island. A setting that could affect the characters negatively.
