Please help! *WILL MEDAL* Thanks ^-^ Which relation is a function?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Read what is inside of the boxes first: http://www.regentsprep.org/regents/math/algebra/ap3/lfunction.htm

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Ok.

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

But isn't this for a graph, or this can also go with a chart too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This applies to what a function is. It will work for both graph and charts. What does it say about X?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

"x-element has only ONE y-element associated with it." ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. What does that mean?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

That the x element can only be paired with one y element?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct. So if X says that y=2, that is the only thing y can be. If your chart shows that x=2 and x=3 then it is not a function

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Okay, I see the x=2 part, but why not x=3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because then the x would be paired with both 2 and 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could say that x=3, but you cannot say that x=3 and x=2 at the same time and have a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the x element can only be paired with one y element

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, look at your charts and see which ones are saying that x is more than one specific y value. Which chart only has x equaling one y value?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What values does -2 equal?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, in chart A when x is -2 it says that y=3 and y=6. Do you see that?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at chart B. Does it have any x that says y= more than one number?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Yes, 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct. when x=14 it says that y=1 and y=2, therefore it is not a function. What about chart C?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

well, x doesn't have any repeating numbers, but for y it does. which is -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is ok for y to have repeating values. Remember we are only concerned with what x says. the x element can only be paired with one y element. So if the x in chart three don't have more that one y value then is it a function?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Oh, okay. C is okay. It's function is -3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C is ok. it is a function. What about D? is D a function?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

D is a possible function.

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

\large\frak\color{lime}{Perfect!~\bigstar}?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at chart D, if x only = one y then it is a function, but if x = two or more y's then it is not a function

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

oh... nvm D isnt a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good job. You correctly identified that D is not a function. You got it.

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

:D \large\frak\color{lime}{yay!~\bigstar}

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

my latex skills are pretty bad. So, just to be clear A is the function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, ask yourself does x identify one or more y's?

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does x repeat itself?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in chart A when x is -2 it says that y=3 and y=6 remember?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reread our conversation and what we covered.

OpenStudy (gabbyalicorn):

Okay, I will.
