@TheSmartOne

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

hello, what do we need to do with 8/3 sqrt 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Simplify it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to multiply the top and bottom of the equation by the bottom.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the screenshot

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

ah, that makes more sense now

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

we need to multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of 3 + sqrt 2

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

do you know what the conjugate of 3 + sqrt 2 is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you explain once you figure it out? I want to understand it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3- sqrt 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I didn't see you replied yet lol

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

that is the conjugate indeed we need to multiply by the conjugate so we can rationalize the fraction. we don't like having square roots in the denominator, but we are fine with them being in the numerator :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The top is 24-8 sqrt 2

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

and to do the bottom, remember: (a+b)(a-b) = a^2 - b^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The bottom is 7 because 3+sqrt2(3-sqrt 2) 9-2=7 answer is c?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes, the denominator is 7 but look carefully at the numerator. you said the numerator should be 24 - 8 sqrt 2 so how can it be C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what it says though...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

oh my bad, I confused C with D yes, it is C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thank you!!!!!

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Anytime! :)
