What was John Calhoun’s major objection to high tariffs? He believed that farmers should not pay tariffs. He felt that tariffs were not equally distributed among the states. He believed that tariffs were unconstitutional. He thought that merchants should bear the tax burden for the states.
Help!
The major goal of the tariff was to protect industries in the northern United States which were being driven out of business by low-priced imported goods by taxing them. what do you think?
The Last One?
Calhoun was from the South. The South had little manufacturing and lots of plantations producing crops for export. The economy of the South depended on selling stuff overseas. They also bought a lot of items from overseas because they didn't manufacture it locally. They bought some from the North but their major trading partners where other countries. The North had manufacturing, They had farming also, but just enough to supply their own needs, not really enough to export much. The North also had merchants who bought and sold the manufactures to other Americans. They didn't import as much stuff as the South. A tariff is a tax on goods being imported. The South stood to pay more because they imported more. The tariff could help Northern merchants because it made foreign goods more expensive. Americans would tend to buy the stuff made in the North more because there would be no tariff on domestic stuff. Calhoun though the South would have more burden than the North from tariffs. B seems to be your best answer.
