OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

You want to find out how many baseball cards Jo had to begin with. Which situation about his card collection best represents the equation A.Half of his cards were ruined after they got wet, and then he lost 1 card. After that, he had 24 cards left. B.He lost 1 card, and then half of his cards were ruined after they got wet. After that, he had 24 cards left. C.Half of his cards were ruined after they got wet, and then he bought 1 more card. After that, he had 24 cards left. D.He bought 1 card, and then half of his cards were ruined after they got wet. After that, he had

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

here's the equation X/2-1=24

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

@zepdrix @midnighti

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What grade is this?

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

Middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6th, 7th, 8th?

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

7th

zepdrix (zepdrix):

X represents the number of cards he has before anything happens. If he then buys one card, we would write X+1 We don't have any addition in our expression, so clearly he didn't buy any cards, ya? :)

OpenStudy (danjs):

X will be the beginning number of cards in this case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I'm in 7th grade too, and my math feels too hard for me. This question is familiar maybe I've done it before, but Idk, sorry :(

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

Oh man I accidentaly closed the question

OpenStudy (danjs):

match the equation to the description, when x is the starting number of cards, and 24 seems to be left after things

zepdrix (zepdrix):

you silly billy :P

zepdrix (zepdrix):

This question is really just testing whether or not you understand order of operations. If X is his cards, Then X/2 is half of his cards getting wet, and X-1 is him losing one card. So if we have X/2 - 1, which happened first, did he lose a card first, or did he lose half first? Think about your order of operations. Division first, or subtraction?

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

I still don' get it

OpenStudy (danjs):

the equation where X is number of cards to start, says half that starting amount, then take away 1, resulting in 24 one of those descriptions matches that logic

OpenStudy (danjs):

so somehow half the cards are gone, then 1 more is gone

OpenStudy (harleygirl18):

so it's A right

OpenStudy (danjs):

right B looks similar, but he looses a card first, leaving X-1 cards, then you have to take half of that value, which is not the given equation, instead B is (X-1)/2 = 24
