Complete the equation of the linear function. y = x +

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

replace that blank with a variable, say b so we have `y = x+b`. The goal is to find what number replaces `b`

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which point do you see on the diagonal line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b is 3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how did you find out that b = 3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

With y mx+b

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`y = mx+b` you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea sorry

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and what does b represent in general?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its repersent X? im kinda confuesd

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how did you find out that b = 3 ? where did you look on the graph to find that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I found it using rise over run

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but the rise over run is the slope, which is -1/1 = -1 in this case

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

maybe you're thinking of the y intercept but mixing it up with the slope? the y intercept is the point where the graph crosses the y axis (the vertical axis), which in this case is 3. So that's why b = 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and earlier above, the slope is m = -1 because you go down 1, and then over to the right 1 so overall, the final equation is `y = -1x+3` which is the same as `y = -x+3`

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh Okay thanks Jim!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no problem
