Civilizations do not just happen. They grow, like families and friendships, from among the people who live in them. The kingdoms of East, Central, and South Africa comprised a variety of African peoples as well as Arabs, Persians, and Indians who came to trade. Each society had its own hierarchy, or social structure. Imagine you have just completed a trip through the early kingdoms and city-states of East, Central, and South Africa. Your family and friends ask you about the trip. Your task is to give them an oral history of your experience. You may choose to write your account, record it, or make a video. Remember, your family and friends will share your story and pass it on to future generations, like oral historians in Africa. Make it fascinating! No one wants to hear a boring story. Tell the most significant or important things you saw or learned about kingdoms or city-states in each region. Be sure to do the following as you complete this assessment: identify at least one kingdom or city-state that you visited from each region—East, Central, and South Eastern Africa Meroe Funj Axum Ethiopia Oromo Swahili Central Africa Bunyoro-Kitara Kongo Southern Africa Great Zimbabwe Mwenamutapa Lunda Luba explain at least one important political, one social, and one economic feature you observed in each of the three places you visited write or speak with a natural narrative voice, as if telling a story to a friend use complete sentences to express your ideas, and make sure that your explanations are thorough by providing details from the lesson write at least three paragraphs total, one for each kingdom or city-state (with at least five complete sentences per paragraph)

Axum is a very wealthy place, in fact, it's the wealthiest on the Ethiopian coast. Want to know another interesting fact? Axum became a kingdom in the third century CE. The reason Axum is so successful is because it trades with other a lot. Axum trades gold, glass and metal. Axum and Adulis were pretty important until the arabs came into the picture and conquered and made Axum non existing. Axum was ruled by monarchy before the arabs came. Before the arabs came, a religion called Christianity was introduced. A King named Ezana was the first King ever to become a Christian. The civilization that I am living in is Axum. The city-state is a thriving trade center, due to its location along the Red Sea. My role involves working in the market bartering off objects such as ivory, gold, glass and whatever I can. Originally, Axum came to be when the African and Arab people that settled along the Red Sea built cities. After some time these cities developed into the city-state we now see. Migration has affected the city because it is located among African, Mediterranean, and Asian trade networks. Many people traveled through this area, and it is the main reason our trade is so thriving. Our economic profits come mainly through our trade with Roman Empire, Egypt, Arabia, and India. Every day in the market you can see bartering and trade taking place. My life is not difficult. I am young, only about 15, but I take on the responsibility of helping my family in the market. I honestly believe I live in one of the most, if not the most, powerful city state. I have yet to see Axum at a weak stage; it always seems to be extending its power and conquering more land. We have seen good fortune after Sassanid Persians overran Arabia. My father claimed to have never seen Axum have such strong influence in Arabia. Yet he confided in me that he fears Axum will soon fall. The Arabs seem set on conquering Adulis. If they do our economy will not survive for they will cut off our access to the Red Sea. I need not fret. For now times are good. You and I can only hope times will stay like this. If not, we may just see the end of the powerful Axum. City - States The African and Arab peoples who settled along the Red Sea built trade cities that became powerful city-states. Axum and Adulis served as the two most important cities of the kingdom. Axum thrived into the sixth century CE, when Sassanid Persians overran Arabia and rolled back Axum's influence there. Then, in the seventh century CE, the Arabs conquered Adulis, cutting off Axum from its prosperous Red Sea trade. Social Activities By the third century CE, Axum had extended its power over the region and grown into a kingdom that set about conquering neighboring lands. The source of Axum's greatness was its position among African, Mediterranean, and Asian trade networks. Political Activities The increase in wealth and the influence of Islam helped an African nobility take control and establish a centralized political authority over many major port cities. These city-states extended their rule over surrounding lands, and sometimes, other cities. Rulers also amassed wealth by collecting taxes from merchants for the goods they traded. Economic Activities The kingdom of Axum traded ivory, gold, glass, and agricultural and metal goods for textiles, spices, oils, and dyes from the Roman Empire, Egypt, Arabia, and India. Religious Activities In the fourth century CE, missionaries brought Christianity to Axum, and in 320 CE, King Ezana became the first known Christian king of Africa I am a teenager from the city of Axum, which is located in Ethiopia. - Great Zimbabwe: The Great Zimbabwe was constructed and expanded for more than 400 hundred years. It was set apart by its structure and ruins and people. - The Great Zimbabwe people ruled with a monarchy system. - Great Zimbabwe: Depended on trade, and involved in farming majorly. -Great Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe is a reminder of achievements. Zimbabwe was announced as a national monument in 1937. Zimbabwe is recognized as a very friendly country. - The Kongo people discovered Raffia cloth that brought wealth to the discovers. City States and Kingdoms - Kongo: The original settlers of Kongo migrated from the Great Rift Valley and over the years, different groups people came together to form the city-state of Kongo. -Kongo: The system of taxation, by which a hierarchy of collectors gathered in a portion of the resources -Kongo: This area adopted Bantu farming, language, and cultural traits. Raffia cloth brought wealth and emerged a new class. The new class came to lead the land of Kongo.

this is mine and compare XD 03.02 Big Picture Africa Assessment Recently I went to three different great places and I thought I should tell them to you. I went to Eastern Africa, central Africa, and Southern Africa to explore and learn about the political, social, and economic features. When I went to the Eastern part of Africa I went to Swahili and it was the best. The beaches were so blue and the culture was so exotic it felt so different. Their political structure really was interesting, because the government is responsible for maintaining, enforcing order, and improving the Swahili life. And I also thought that not only men but also women can lead the Swahili city-states, was very interesting as well. Its so cool that a city-state is a city that I also a separate and an independent state. By the looks of it when I got there, the trade looked like it was the most important to the Swahili civilization. China, India, and Southwest Asia are the port cities of East Africa, which means that the Swahili people get things from different places and different cultures as well. I noticed that Swahili view of the declining economy and erosion of their culture created some social problems. For example, when the tourists visit they walk with shorts and bikinis and drink alcohol in public has in some cases threatened the proper Islamic life that many Swahili people struggle to continue. Another problem is that the Kenyans have resented their ways and have been slave trading, which is something the Swahili people do not like. After Swahili, I went to Central Africa and stopped by Kongo. The views were amazing and the mountains made me feel like I was in my family’s farm in Colombia. It felt like home and it felt like freedom from all the worries and distraction. Although Swahili has mountains Kongo seems different, I think because Swahili has more beaches near and Kongo is more of a mountain place then with beaches. The political structure of Kongo is Monarchy. Monarchy is a form of government that is actually embodied in one or several people reigning until death or stepping down from office. Just like in other places I visited Kongo was split with three social classes: the high class, middle class, and the lower class. There was a lot of trading going on when I was there, different things with different cultures. Trading is very important for the economy to become wealthy and strong. What I saw around the place I saw that Kongo is heavily influenced by the people from Bantu. The last place I went right after Kongo is the Southern part, Africa. The Great Zimbabwe has some really cool monuments and ruins that showed the ways of the people back then and told a story of their past. From the ancient great architectural structures to the soapstone birds this place really was interesting to visit and I encourage going if anyone wants to, I would be willing to go again. Although Great Zimbabwe didn’t have a social structure it was really just made up of the rich and the poor, meaning the upper class and the lower class. Apparently in the late 1350s, Great Zimbabwe was the center of the gold trade. I saw some places where they had gold jewelry, but I guess in this time Great Zimbabwe didn’t trade gold like they used too. Their flag also has some history as well that is very interesting. In 1980, the country was renamed and the famous soapstone was taken and they put it in the flag, which I think was a great idea. I think it was a great idea because it shows the past of their history and it reminds them that they have a great and rich history, which will be with them now and forever.

So can you explain a little more what you mean by making it smaller? like do you want to take sentences out or ?

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

I'm only supposed to have 3 paragraphs lol but I still need to keep in the stuff I need .__. these are the instructions: Civilizations do not just happen. Hayhayz (hayhayz):

Alright let me look over your work real quick:)

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

the first 2 paragraphs are fine

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

alrighty :D thanks!

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

The last sentence in the third paragraph isn't supposed to be there lol my bad

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

http://prntscr.com/9sr6gs Ok looking at the 3rd paragraph i dont think what is highlighted necessarily needs to be there, and yea you beat me to it the last sentence is out of place haha

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

I don't even know what I typed that especially right there haha

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

loool and you only want 4 paragraphs? or can you have 4 if i try to shorten it

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

OOPS i meant you only want 3

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

maybe if it's smaller but it say's 3

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

hmm alright ill see what i can do @dan815

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

If not I'll turn it in like this lol my teacher can't really get mad if I did extra... well at least I hope not lol

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

Nah she wont get mad haha i havent read the last one yet so let me see if i can help shorten it first

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

alrighty :D

OpenStudy (dan815):

How short do you want to make it?

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

It's supposed to be three paragraphs so about three :)

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

http://prntscr.com/9sr99l i would combine these sentences into one. You could say something like Zimbabwe was announced as a national monument in 1937 and is recognized as a very friendly country. Also "The system of taxation, by which a hierarchy of collectors gathered in a portion of the resources." This seems a little outta place to me. The following sentence what is the name of that area?

OpenStudy (dan815):

So to summarize every paragraph must have -Include at least one of each political, social, economic features. -speak with a natural narrative voice, -@least 5 sentences

OpenStudy (dan815):

ill work on this paragraph ---------- The African and Arab peoples who settled along the Red Sea built trade cities that became powerful city-states. Axum and Adulis served as the two most important cities of the kingdom. Axum thrived into the sixth century CE, when Sassanid Persians overran Arabia and rolled back Axum's influence there. OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

@Hayhayz it's in South Africa and @Dan Thank you :)

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

@dan815 also identify at least one kingdom or city-state that you visited from each region—East, Central, and South, but I did this in the last paragraph.

OpenStudy (dan815):

ya you have everything in that paragraph

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

if anything needs to be taken out it will have to be something in the last paragraph. but i think you might as well keep 4 paragraphs

OpenStudy (dan815):

your political and social points are mixed together well, i wouldnt worry about it

OpenStudy (dan815):

it does say atleast 3 paragraphs so you can go over, just not under

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

Alrighty I'll just turn it in :) Thank you both very much!

Hayhayz (hayhayz):

You are welcome and good job :)

OpenStudy (adrianna.gongora):

:)

(:

such good workers u 2 are '_'
