Help! What is the first quartile (Q1) of the data set? 48, 40, 59, 74, 51, 45, 62, 69

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it will be (40+59)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got 99?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first quartile is the middle number from the smallest number to the median..if you arrange the data set from smallest to largest..it will be 40,45,48,51,59,62,69,74

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hence, Q1 is (45+48)/2 = 46.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay but how did you get there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so...you arrange the data set from smallest to largest... to find the middle number(median) but since the total number of values in the set is even (8 values), you add the two middle ones and divide by two.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You understand it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

Glad you do!
