Systems: A candy store wants to mix candy that cost $2 a pound with some that costs $3 a pound. They want 80 pounds of candy to sell for $2.20 a pound. How much of each type should be used?

OpenStudy (mysangels):

I know one equation: x + y = 80. What would the other be?

OpenStudy (priyar):

yeah correct this for the quantity..The next one should be for cost....

OpenStudy (mysangels):

I thought maybe 2x + 3y = 2.20, but that gives me a negative answer, so I changed the total to 17.60

OpenStudy (priyar):

what is the total cost that the candy store is ready to sell for?

OpenStudy (mysangels):

2.20 x 80 = 17.60

OpenStudy (priyar):

check the decimal point..

OpenStudy (mysangels):

Oh. $176

OpenStudy (priyar):

ya good the rest of ur eq is correct

OpenStudy (priyar):

can u solve them?

OpenStudy (mysangels):

Ok. So the total of $3 candy is 16.

OpenStudy (mysangels):

And $2 candy is 64?

OpenStudy (priyar):

yes! u r correct! WELL DONE!

OpenStudy (priyar):

u can also plug -in these values in the eq.'s to check if ur answer is correct...

OpenStudy (mysangels):

Thank you! ^-^

OpenStudy (priyar):

u r welcome..
