CAN YOU CHECK THE ANSWERS I GOT PLEASE?? Y | 3 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 3 | ______________________________________ X | 84 | 77 | 92 | 70 | 60 | 90 | 75 | Slope= 0 Y-Intercept= 90 Thank you for helping! If I got it wrong can you please help me solve it??

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Not really clear what it is we are doing, here. Are we searching for a Least-Squares line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny I was supposed to find the slope and the Y-intercept, but I wasn't sure if I got it right so I'm just asking for help

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You already said that and it doesn't answer the objection. You have a bunch of x-and y- data. It doesn't mean enough. They do not all fall on a single line. (See how y = 3 appears twice.) There is not a Slope or a y-intercept to be found. Can you find the ENTIRE question and then show your best work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny I think that's EXACTLY what I'm supposed to do, the teacher wasn't very clear she just gave up that chart up there, and gave me the question: What is the equation for the best line fit? Its a multiple part question, I already drew the scatter plot and I drew the line best fit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny ? you there? :(

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Well, you seem to have your x and y mixed up. That's the only way you could get an intercept of 90. Try it again after switching x and y to what it says, above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny , okay, give me one second please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im doing something wrong, I got the exact same answer

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I sure wish you could show your work. I can't help with dark magic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you maybe just tell me what you need to know about the question and help me solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh right I forgot, @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

" I already drew the scatter plot and I drew the line best fit" How did you do that? What did it look like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Heres a picture of what I did, the chart in my homework is labeled: Hours studied, which on this question is the Y and test score which is X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DARN IT I keep forgetting @tkhunny

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

As I expected, you have treated x and y backwards. You have x on the vertical axis. This is confusing. You have a big, fat dot on your vertical axis at 60. How does this lead to an intercept at 90? That makes no sense. Anyway, this time, actually switch the roles of x and y. Make them as they appear in the problem statement and NOT as you have drawn them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny Im a bit confused because all my teacher gave me was this: Study Hours 3 2 5 1 0 4 3 Grade 84 77 92 70 60 90 75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somebody please help me I have no clue what to do if its not right, and it seems that it

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Where did you get x and y in the original post?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny there wasnt one, I just kind of arranged it the way I thought it would go

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It helps to have the right problem statement. That's a lot of wasted time. Okay, your scatter plot looks fine. Your line looks fine. Now, decode it properly. |dw:1453498822716:dw| Does your slope and intercept make any sense at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny not really no, thanks for helping me. But then what would slope be?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Figure it out. Look at your line and find two points that seem reliable. Calculate it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny I think my teacher might have taught me a different way then you're describing, Im not really sure what you mean, pick two points on my scatter point and then do what?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I didn't say pick to of the points you plotted. Pick two points on your line. That is how you calculate slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny but arent all the points, points that I plotted?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Have you never calculated the slope of a line? You should have covered this in Algebra I. Forget we have a scatter plot. Find the slope of that line you drew.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny I'm trying to say that I dont know what to do, all you're telling me is to find the slope when I dont know how, can you help me find the slope? Because not to be rude but, just because you keep repeating the same instructions that tell me nothing doesnt mean that I suddenly know how. So can you please help me find the slope? Because I dont know how to do that.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I am not repeating the same instructions. I keep backing up in order find where you are functioning. |dw:1453499746313:dw| All we need is the calculation of the slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny I know you're just trying to help but I really dont understand, and I have guests coming over soon. I know its against the rules of OS, but could you please just give me the answer? the teacher said to write it as a y=mx+b equation

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Find two points on your line and calculate it. MS Excel gives: Slope: 6.3145 Intercept: 62.048

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny Thank you very much

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Brush up on your algebra. If you can't calculate the slope of a given line, you're toast.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny Okay, I will. Im working on all of this stuff now, but I'm a litte stressed because I have guests coming in a few minutes. thanks again
