Why did Mendel prevent his plants from self-pollinating? to control the crossing of the traits in order to insure that each plant's offspring would remain identical to the parents to maintain a pure strain so they could not produce offspring

Think about what the most important part of an experiment is =]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would think that it would be he prevented his plants from pollinating themselves is to maintain a pure strain. is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He stopped them from self pollinating so he could be sure who the parents were, other wise he would not be sure if the phenotypes were from a self cross or the cross he was trying to produce.

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

He wanted the genes to be completely controlled by him, not the random chance of pollination.
