Theorem: The segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half its length. A two-column proof of the theorem is shown, but the statement and reasons are not in correct order. http://learn.flvs.net/webdav/assessment_images/educator_geometry_v14/pool_Geom_3641_1008_03/image0054e8c8d35.jpg

OpenStudy (word2):

Statement Reason I Segment DE is half the length of segment AC. By substitution II Segment DE is parallel to segment AC. Slopes of parallel lines are equal. III The coordinates of point D are (4, 5) and coordinates of point E are (5, 3) By the midpoint formula IV Length of segment DE is Square root of 5and length of segment AC is 2 multiplied by the square root of 5. By the distance formula V Slope of segment DE is -2 and slope of segment AC is -2. By the slope formula

OpenStudy (word2):

Which is the most logical order of statements and reasons for the proof? III, V, II, IV, I III, I, IV, II, V III, IV, I, II, V I, IV, III, V, II i think the answer is the second one but i'm not sure

OpenStudy (mikwind):

the link for the image doesn't work

OpenStudy (word2):

OpenStudy (mikwind):

I agree III comes first, but IV needs to happen before I

OpenStudy (word2):

What do you think of the fourth one?

OpenStudy (mikwind):

and V also needs to happen before II , that leaves only one option

OpenStudy (mikwind):

the fourth one doesn't agree with V before II

OpenStudy (word2):

is it the first one then ?

OpenStudy (word2):

i'm confused

OpenStudy (word2):

and yes the fourth says >> I, IV, III, V, II but i know that the III needs to come first , that's why i originally though it was the second option

OpenStudy (mikwind):

ok, its simple, the last one is ruled out because starting with I just makes no sense., now , you can't say the slopes are equal withult calculating the slopes first, so V has to happen before II

OpenStudy (word2):

okay so it would make sense for it be the first one because 3, needs to happen first . and V has to happen before and IV has to happen before I ?

OpenStudy (word2):

*II

OpenStudy (mikwind):

exactly

OpenStudy (word2):

Thanks.
