“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”– Simone de Beauvoir. If you assumed this quote is from a female you are absolutely right. Being called a woman is always frowned upon in a “man’s world”. Imagine being a black female, it’s opposed by society erupting low self-esteem and no confidence. This is why it is important for young people to know and tell the history of the struggle of the past. Maybe it’s because the past repeats itself or maybe people can prevent that from happening. Stop the negative aspects of the past and evolve into a new and improve nation. For starters, African American girls aren’t given the foundation to become woman. Black history usually consist of the regular –Martin Luther King, Booker T. Washington, and Frederick Douglass. These are great African American leaders for black history. The problem is as humans we compare our characteristics and accomplishments with other humans. This results in African American females analyzing the similarities and differences of their idols. With no modern motivation they are stuck with no drive and influence in the world. I’m here to talk about black females as a whole and give them the credit they rarely get rewarded with. I’m all for gender equality and freedom of all colors. I had to thoroughly look for a club for black females but as soon as I research “African American female landmarks in Miami or Miami’s local history landmarks,” the results consisted of woman clubs so I was filled with glee. I did more and more research on these female clubs and learned they only contained white females I felt dumbstruck and I was overwhelmed with confusion. On the other hand, these historical landmarks may only consist of white females but that’s where I’m stuck on realizing that black females are not even given a historical landmark in my state. In addition, we may have landmarks in the world but not were its needed most. Female leaders of the past such as Mary McLeod Bethune left a legacy that will support black females as a whole. “The Council House was the first headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and was Bethune’s last home in Washington, DC. From here, Bethune and the NCNW spearheaded strategies and developed programs that advanced the interests of African American women.” Not necessarily all females but the ones in a historical landmarks “Miami Women's Club” and “Woman's Club of Coconut Grove” only have white females. These are some of the woman clubs in my state so imagine the disappointment I experienced when finding this out. Male and Females need to be given equality no matter what color and shape they are. In my mind I believe that we could have little programs or clubs locally for females of all color. No need for segregation on any kind. I really thought we were past all this I believed African Americans already paved a way for future generations to live in peace. This is also another reason why young people need to know and tell the history of the struggle of the past. The past repeats itself as shown above. In conclusion, maybe just maybe if more and more people address this problem change will occur. This is what gave me hope, that I’m not the only one that faces society as a black female with no direction in life. Only if more programs like this were established in my community I just wonder and dream of the difference it would make. We desperately need a historical landmark for all the things we contribute in the world. Look at Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Madam C.J. Walker, Harriet Tubman or our modern day Oprah Winfrey next time instead of the original African American male leaders in history.
