OpenStudy (steve816):

Please somebody help with an exponent question

OpenStudy (steve816):

\[9^x = 4\] What is \[3^{5x}\]

OpenStudy (steve816):

I got 34 as an answer, is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

134x i think

OpenStudy (steve816):

No that is not right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (steve816):

cammie you're not helping...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well I took 3x3x3x3x3 five times

OpenStudy (steve816):

Well, that is not how you do this problem! @Cammie21

OpenStudy (steve816):

Please, I need someone smart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol solve for x in \[9^x = 4\] by using logarithms

OpenStudy (steve816):

HELP ME PLEASE!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does X equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well idc and are u calling me stupid

OpenStudy (steve816):

I need help, urgent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@steve816 do this\[x=\log_{9}(4) \]

OpenStudy (steve816):

SO how does that help???

OpenStudy (steve816):

The question is asking what is 3^5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it tells you what x's value is

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

That gives you x, then you multiply x by 5 for the next part and use the new value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what she said ^

OpenStudy (steve816):

how do I get the answer?

OpenStudy (mattga2002):

I know this is not what you are looking for. but the answer to 9^x=4 is x=0.63093

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

I would use a calculator, nobody likes logarithms when the exponent is a fraction. And you know it's a fraction because the result is less than the base number but higher than 1. If the result was less than 1, your exponent is also negative

OpenStudy (steve816):

You know what... I give up... this is a no calc question...

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

How about raising each side to the 5th power? That will turn the ^x into ^5x

OpenStudy (mattga2002):

You Can Easily Use A Calculator, I Agree With @steve816

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

No I mean if you want to not use a calculator, do it the way I just said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or just substitute mattga2002's answer for x\[3^{5(0.63093)}\]

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

(9^x)^5=4^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and solve

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

Yes but he is avoiding using a calculator. He should just apply the ^5 to both sides

OpenStudy (nuttyliaczar):

It's still ugly to solve on paper but it's nicer than a logarithm
