PEMDAS LESSONS: HERE TO PROVE HOW PEMDAS IS WRONG. If anyone needs help I am here and just ask your PEMDAS QUESTION AND I CAN EXPLAIN IT. sorry for caps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEMDAS is really PEMoDAoS.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The o stands for or.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have tons of people who I know that get this incorrect. I have also made the same mistakes as some people have and will always make mistakes since that is what makes us human. So I am just here to say that this can be easy if you believe you can do it and try your best and learn from your mistakes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Or Division Adding and Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The or is for just clarifying you do which ever comes first meaning if you have 17 * 3 + 6/2 in this order. You would go for multiplication since it comes before division

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

The teachers should tell their students that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah ikr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I learned it and sucked at it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then I met a math guy who told me it is different and it is PEMoDAoS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which really helped me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also the same goes for division meaning if it is 16/2 + 17 * 4 you would go for division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and vice versa

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

In all reality, there is no such thing as subtraction or division, so it's just PEMA

zepdrix (zepdrix):

I usually like to write it like this: P E MD AS It's like levels. The P takes highest priority, and we can see that M and D are on the same level.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true that is another way to put it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

zepdrix (zepdrix):

hehe ya i like that :) when you finally realize that subtraction is just a myth XD

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

could also argue there's no such thing as multiplication or exponents since they stem from addition, but I like them for simplicity's sake

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Liam2004 Parentheses Exponents Multiplication Or Division Adding and Subtraction \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) PEMoDos or PEMoDaS?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

The thing they teach with PEMDAS is: Multiplication and division, whichever comes first when you go left to right. Addition and subtraction, whichever comes first when you go left to right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true

OpenStudy (aihberkhan):

Awesome! Keep up the good work! @Liam2004

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for some teachers and then they say use PEMDAS which confuses kids

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thx @AihberKhan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What I hate about 4th and 5th grade teachers they keep on saying use PEMDAS not use PEMoDAoS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the kids get confused and are failing tests.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and don't know why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and also kids can't figure out what grade they got on a test without the teacher putting the percent on it which is crazy.

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Luckily when I got a new teacher I told her I was confused and she took the time to explain and I got it but I guess that doesn't happen to most kids :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be a better idea to say you get like a bonus on your grade if you can do the math to figure out what grade you got. It would give the kids more of a challenge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kids would call me a nerd for doing math and then would ask me to do their homework since I complete it in 5 minutes when it takes them 10 min.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which I hate since what they say to me

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

hahahaha I enjoy doing math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you call me a nerd and then ask me to do your homework. Would you think I would want to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hate algebra since the only time you would use it is to get honor roll

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and people say they are smart and are in like 4th grade. I ask them what is PEMDAS. They say I don't know. Which I think is crazy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also if someone were to do a problem they would mess it up and that is what I hate about schools these days

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We are losing in math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are avg. IQ has dropped by like approx. 10 points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

insane!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I love math

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I just don't like the idea of people saying they are smart

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Liam, there are ninth graders who struggle with add/subtract/mult/div for integers without a calculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

thanks to CCSS, BEDMAS/PEMDAS aren't even taught till like 5/6th at least not at a depth kids understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause they are afraid to be wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my mother made me learn multiplication in kindergarten which made me think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had no clue though

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no, they just don't know how cause they were handed a calculator in 3rd grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they hate math since they don't think they are awarded and are always trapped inside

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

There is no such thing as a kid who can't do math. There is just a very obvious reflection of the education system failing many kids.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be better to have the math teacher be like a comedian

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

learned helplessness is a real issue.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause it increases their time able to focus

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Not necessarily comedian, but at least age appropriate material. If you give a 2nd grader abstract material, they aren't going to get it because their brain hasn't developed to there yet usually

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not to mention the lack of recess in the k-5 school day... that is disgusting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea and the punishments are crazy for kids who do nothing

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you mean lack of punishment?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Liam, please keep this discussion focused and serious. If you've heard of PEMDDAS, you probably heard of it in the context of having to evaluate mathematical expressions. Please go back to wherever you learned PEMDAS, choose several problems to practice on, do the work and share your results here on OpenStudy for feedback. Please let's not delve into "punishment," "kids do this or that," or the like, which are beside the point. Your learning will improve as your focus improves.
