im bad 2 dont worry lol

OpenStudy (mathmale):

"The product of a number and the sum of one and four is 40. Find the number." You have ONE unknown number here. Please choose a letter of the alphabet to represent it.

OpenStudy (phagey):

huh? @mathmale

@mathmale

OpenStudy (phagey):

is it 36 @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

This being Algebra, we need to represent unknowns by letters. We could choose x to represent the unknown number. "The product of a number and the sum of one and four is 40. Find the number." This becomes x ( 1 + 4 ) = 40. Because of order of operations rules, we must do the operation within parentheses first. would you do that now, please, and rewrite the equation in its new form?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

x ( ? )=40

OpenStudy (phagey):

8

OpenStudy (phagey):

8 times 5 equal 40

OpenStudy (phagey):

so can the x represent 5

OpenStudy (mathmale):

No. The x represents the unknown number. Thus, x(5)=40, or, better, 5x=40. How would you solve that for x?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Sorry, but I've got to go. Perhaps we could continue this discussion later.

OpenStudy (phagey):

by simplifying?
