OpenStudy (aravindg):

Use the two point form or intercept form.

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

To find the slope?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Start by picking 2 points that are on the graph.

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

2 and 4?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Coordinates come in pairs (x,y)

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

(2,4) (5,6)

pooja195 (pooja195):

None of those are points on the graph... |dw:1455077661883:dw|

pooja195 (pooja195):

Look at the dots those represent points

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

So I pick any of those 2 points and use the slope formula?

pooja195 (pooja195):

correct

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

Is it 1/2?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I will arbitrarily pick a point for you to start with and ask you to pick another point on the graph: Let my point be (-4,0). Move to the right along the line and choose another point (trying to select one whose coordinates are integers). Your choice? ( x, y )

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Next, use the slope formula to find the slope of this straight line. Next, insert the appropriate values of the slope (m) and the coordinates of one of these points into the point-slope formula for the equation of a straight line:\[y-y _{0}=m(x-x _{0})\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you'd like for someone to tell you you're correct or not, please show how you obtained your result. For example, what calculations led you to believe that the slope is 1/2?

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

pooja195 (pooja195):

1/2 is correct. Two points: 0,2 2,3 3-2=1 2-0=2 I did it with different points :P but still got the same answer

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

Thank you guys for the help. :)

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

So the y-intercept is 2 right?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Yes the line is hitting +2 on the y axis

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Look at the graph again. What are the coordinates of the point where the graph crosses the y-axis? x = ? y = ?

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

Why is it +2 and not just 2?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Same thing :P i meant it as a shorter version of positive 2

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

So 2 and +2 are the same? That's confusing.

pooja195 (pooja195):

+2 means 2

pooja195 (pooja195):

IT means positive 2 lol

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

Why would they have 2 of the same answers?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

A numeral such as 2, without either a + or a - sign, is automatically assumed to be positive.

pooja195 (pooja195):

The line is hitting 2 on the y axis therefore you are correct.
