is (1, -4) a solution to the equation y=-2x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nincompoop help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi, need some help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so to find out if the point is the solutiion to the equation we simply plug the values in the equation and see if the equation is balanced

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so y=-2(-4)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not quite, our x intercept = 1 and our y intercept = -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so -4=-2(1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so if we simplify the right side of the equation, what do we get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we get -4=-2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so is it balanced?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's your answer :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem :) great job

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

here is what you need to know \((x,y) \rightarrow \) for the value of x, it returns a particular value of y how do we determine that? well you have to look at the equation you are given y = -2x again (x, y) y = -2x 4 = -2(1) are the equal? are they?
