OpenStudy (priyar):

Δng = no of moles of gaseous products - reactants what will be this quantity's value for the formation of carbon monoxide. it seems to me that 2 values are correct..

OpenStudy (priyar):

@Rushwr

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Okai what is the reaction in the first place ?

OpenStudy (priyar):

C + O2 --> CO

OpenStudy (rushwr):

First balance the reaction \[2C _{s} + O _{2} -----------> 2CO\] Is this it ?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

What exactly is in the question ?

OpenStudy (priyar):

ya thats what u can balance in two ways..so u get two diff values...do u agree?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

yep

OpenStudy (priyar):

but they are given as two diff options...which to choose..coz it can have only "one" correct answer...this is my doubt....is it 1 or 1/2 ? why/why not?

OpenStudy (priyar):

??

OpenStudy (priyar):

actually we are using this value in the eq.: \[\Delta H =\Delta U +\Delta ngRT\]

OpenStudy (rushwr):

I think we will have to go by the definition. Formation enthaply is the energy change when 1 mole of product is formed. Since CO is the product, so we should balance reaction assuming that one mole of CO is formed. C(s) + 1/2O2 (g) ----------------------> CO(g) So the difference is 1/2

OpenStudy (priyar):

ok.. i guess u r right!

OpenStudy (priyar):

thanks!

OpenStudy (rushwr):

No problem :)
