Astronomers measure large distances in light-years. One light-year is the distance that light can travel in one year, or approximately 5.88 × 10^12 miles. Suppose a star is 9.8 × 10^1 light-years from Earth. In scientific notation, approximately how many miles is it? I WILL FAN AND MEDAL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PLEASE HELP!! I NEED THIS ASAP!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know the answer?

OpenStudy (21younga):

I'm working it out trying to figure this out :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx so much!

OpenStudy (21younga):

its kinda hard so can you give me a few?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok take ur time

OpenStudy (21younga):

so 5.88X10^12= 588,000,000,000 and 9.8 X 10^1= 98

OpenStudy (21younga):

so the question is asking what the scientific notation for 9.8 X 10^1 so it would be 98 miles.

OpenStudy (21younga):

because how many powers there are you move the decimal over to the right if its positive and if its negative you move it to the left that many times

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My choices are 5.88 x 10^13 5.76 x 10^14 5.88 x 10^12 9.8 x 10^12

OpenStudy (21younga):

hmmmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DOnt forget its MILES

OpenStudy (21younga):

I'm pretty sure it's the last one. Tell me what you get at the end. And just wondering are you in Connects Academy or K-12? I'm in k-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im in connections, but i was in k12 for 2 years. I'm only an 11 year old, but i'm in highschool algebra.

OpenStudy (21younga):

cool! I Just finished Scientific Notation in normal Pre-Algebra although I have solved high school questions before

OpenStudy (21younga):

So please tell me what you get at the end!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was wrong. The answer was b. Thanks tho! Ill medal u

OpenStudy (21younga):

Dang it!! thanks anyway for the medal!! did you pass at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep made a 90. My grade is still a 96. Thanks!
