Can someone help me with this math problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which expression gives the solutions of -5+2x^2=-6x?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the first step is to get the equation into ax^2+bx+c = 0 form

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so let's do that -5+2x^2=-6x -5+2x^2+6x=-6x+6x 2x^2+6x-5 = 0 can you tell me what the values of a,b,c are ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how I got 2x^2+6x-5 = 0 so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this was more of like a check my answer xD i got C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you get C?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes C is the correct answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks dude

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

can you help me with another one? @jim_thompson5910 it says how many real solutions are there for 5x^2+7x+2 a. 0 b. 1 ♥♥♥ c. 2 d. 5 my answer is ♥

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

you may want to post anew, thus we all can see it, more eyes how many real solutions? check your Descarte Rule of Signs

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

5x^2+7x+2 has a = 5, b = 7, c = 2 discriminant D = b^2 - 4ac D = 7^2 - 4*5*2 D = 49 - 40 D = 9 the discriminant is 9, which is a positive number since D > 0, this means there are 2 distinct solutions furthermore, the discriminant D = 9 is a perfect square, so the two solutions are going to be rational solutions (fractions of whole numbers)
