if anyone can help id mean a lot,its finding the area and height of a triangle with knowledge of the sides pic below

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the picture isn't up...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ignore the writing

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

Area of the triangle is 1/2 * base * height. In this case what's the base and what's the height?

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

the big triangle that is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know the base or height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know the base is less then thirteen and the height is x

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

as in you don't know the value or you don't know which side is the base?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the base is the thirteen side because the height is perpindicular to it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i used herons formula to find the area of the entire triangle which is 30 if that helps anyone

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

not sure what herons formula is but there is also another base and height of the same triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ab/2 , a being 12 and b being 13, if u flip the entire triangle backwars its a right triangle soooo

OpenStudy (isaidavila):

Base=5 H=12

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?? how

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

so area is 30 which you already know. so since 1/2 * 13 * x also equals 30,

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

ok you see the other side of the triangle there's a right angle too right between the 5 and 12

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

actually since you already know the area I can just continue unless you wanna know how 5 and 12 is also the height and base?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

ok so you know height and base there has to be a right angle some where right. Like they have to be perpendicular. In this case if you see the 5 or 12 length side you notice that the two sides are perpendicular. Hence they are also the height and base of the triangle
