OpenStudy (stuck-help):

How does friction affect the maximum speed of a skater? i know this is a physical science question but no one there has the answer

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Well friction slows down someone so......I'm not to good at science

OpenStudy (mrnood):

A skater can generate a certain amount of Power (the amount depends on how well trained he is) As long as the power he exerts is MORE than the power needed to overcome resistance then he can go faster. As hegoes faster so the power exerted against friction on the ice AND against friction through the air increases Eventaully the power neede to overcome the friction is equal to the maximum he can generate - and that is his maximum speed.

OpenStudy (stuck-help):

thank you @MrNood

OpenStudy (stuck-help):

Calculate the potential energy (PE)of the skater at the top of the hill. Show your calculations and record the units as J (joules) @MrNood how do i do this i have no idea how to

OpenStudy (mrnood):

In order to calculate the PE you need to know th emass of the skater. I can't see that you are given that information - have you posted teh whole question?
