hello

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

allo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know the answer

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so... "r" is the amount of "raisins" Terri purchased give it a number, any number... say.. .what would you use? 0.5, 1, 1.5 whatever, so pick a number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.5

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ok... 1.5 so.. let's supposed she bought 1.5 of raisins total is 2.1lbs she bought how many lbs of granola did she buy, if she bought 1.5 of raisins, off 2.1lbs total?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

alrite... let's put it this way your mom say ok, go to store and get me 2.1lbs of raisins and granola for breakfast get me 1.5 lbs of raisins, and the rest will be granola how much is the "rest"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so you go back to your mom and show her 1.5 of raisins, and 1.5 of granola is that 2.1 of raisins and granola?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... then I guess the "rest" is not 1.5lbs :) if you're getting 1.5lbs of raisins and your total needs to be 2.1lbs total how much of granola can you buy? recall, 2.1lbs total, but from that, 1.5lbs is raisins so, how much of granola then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.5?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

if you go home with 1.5lbs of raisins and 1.5lbs of granola, your mom will say wait a second here, 1.5 + 1.5 is 3.0 lbs but we only needed 2.1lbs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get it

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

if your sister owes you $2.10 and she pays you $1.50, how much does she owe you still?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.60

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ahahhh! how did you get 0.60 though? yes it's, but how did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.10-1.50=0.60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you plz tell me the answer i need to go

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ahahh! you subtracted, subtraction = difference to know the difference between two quantities, you simply "subtract" them :) same with this case, if your mom needs only 1.5 of raisins and 2.1 total 2.1 - 1.5 = 0.6 so 0.6 of granola because 1.5 + 0.6 = 2.1lbs now, in the case above, we dunno the exact amount of raisins, we do know is \(\bf r\) whatever "r" is we also know that, the total of raisins and granola is 2.1lbs total so the amount of granola is , "the difference from the total and the raisins" 2.1 - "whatever amount of raisins" or 2.1 - "r"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so the answer is A

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yeap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help me with a few more

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

sure, post anew, thus if I dunno, someone else may know :)
