Check my consumer math answers please! I will give medal to best answer.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Tip and Sales tax cause a restaurant bill to____. a. increase b. decrease c. stay the same d. be unaffordable When estimating using money for a purchase, you should_____. a. round up b. round down c. estimate up to the nearest dollar or half dollar d. estimate down to the nearest dollar or half dollar You purchase a piece of cake for $3.49. What would be a good estimation for just purchasing the cake? a. 3.00 b. 3.50 c. 4.00 d. 3.75 Your total restaurant bill for food, drinks, and tip is $37.40. What is a good estimate cost for just the food and drinks? a. 33.50 b. 37.00 c. 36.00 d. 34.00

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

My answers are: 1. A 2. C 3. B 4. D

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I am pretty sure that 1. A 3. B are correct. But, 2. Shouldn't you round to the nearest cent? 4. How am I supposed to know what kind of tip to give?

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

2. The lesson I was taught says you're supposed to round up to the nearest half-dollar or dollar. 4. I'm confused about this one too. I got D from someone online, but they didn't explain how they got it.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Are you there?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

2. If that is what the lesson says, than this is probably the correct answer. 4. I wouldn't say for sure, but I would assume that tip is at least not in coins. (Kind of too insulting, isn't it?) Perhaps, you gave $4 for the tip. And remained with $33.40 from which you come up with estimate for food and drinks of $33.50.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So, I would choose A for #4, but I don't guarantee that if you choose that, then this would be correct.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

I have no idea how to solve 4. They didn't teach this in the lesson. :/ But for all these questions, the sales tax and tips have been 10% every time, so it's probably 10% for this question too. Could you multiply this by .9 to get the original price?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

So, if the tip is 10%, then the food & drinks is 90%. Since the whole thing is 100%. Then, yes, it would be correct to multiply the whole price by 0.9 (or to take the 90% of the whole price), to get the cost of food and drinks.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

making sense?

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Let me read the question again, I'm kinda confused

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Oh okay I think I see what you mean. So assuming the tip is 10%, which it has been this whole lesson, the original price for the food and drinks was $33.66, which rounds up to $34.00, which could be the answer...

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Actually, not quite. If you estimate between 33 and 34, then you choose 34. But, if you estimate between 33.50 and 34.00, then wouldn't 33.50 be closer? So, I think that your original answer was correct, actually./

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I mean, wouldn't 33.66 be closer to 33.50 rather than to 34.00?

OpenStudy (theprofessor35):

Tip and Sales tax cause a restaurant bill to____. a. increase b. decrease c. stay the same d. be unaffordable The answer would be increase, that is because a sale would make the bill increase.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

@SolomonZelman Yes, 33.50 would be the closest, but according to number two, you're only supposed to round UP to the nearest dollar. So I'm thinking it's D...

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Nope

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

The lesson says to round up to the nearest dollar or half-dollar.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

or, at least that is what you wrote above.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Wait why did you say "Nope"? Was I wrong about something?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

If you add 10% to a bill for the tip/tax, then it means you multiply the bill by 1.1. Which means if 10% has already been added, like the last question, you'd divide that total price by 1.1.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

@agent0smith Isn't multiplying it by .9 the same as dividing by 1.1? That's what we did earlier...

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Wait, so you are adding 10% to the bill for the tip. Not as I was previously told, that tip is 10%....

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

And no it is not the same

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

No it is not the same @dinorap1

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

1/1.1 = 10/11 Dividing by 1.1 is same as multiplying times 10/11.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

0.9 is 9/10, 1.1 is 11/10, there's no way the fractions can be the same in any multiplication or division.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

What? Really? Well when you divide 37.4 by 1.1 you get exactly 34. So is D the answer still?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Honestly we don't know, because consumer math isn't a typical math class. We don't know what your class has been taught to use for tip or w/e.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Hmm. Well I guess all I can do is submit the answers and see if we're right or not... Do you guys think the other three are right at least?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I think that you got all of them right at this point, but I also won't grant anything for sure.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

If the tip is 10% of the bill, added on top of the whole (100%) cost, then #4 is D. If the tip is 10% of the bill (so, food+drinks=90%, and tip=10%), then #4 is A.

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

I guess all I can do is submit them and see...

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

I got a 4/4. Thanks guys, I wish I could give more than one medal... :)

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Good job :) Medals don't matter so much to 99's haha

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I got over 13K of them.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yeah I just noticed. Okay give them to me instead haha

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Maybe it feels nice at the beginning, but then .... I rather feel beter when I am capable of putting really nice stuff in latex.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

without lagging so much :)

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Oh wow! That's insane! :O You deserve them though you really helped me understand the question better :D

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Not a problem. You welcome, and good luck with the class!

OpenStudy (dinorap1):

Thank you very much. Cya guys later! I'll fan both of you :)
