What is the area of the figure? A. 84 in2 B. 189 in2 C. 231 in2 D. 315 in2

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Basically, what youʻre going to do is #1 Find the area of the triangle (the white space) #2 Find the area of the rectangle #3 Subtract the area of the triangle from the area of the rectangle

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

The rectangle is basically Height = 13in Base = 21in Do you understand how this works?

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Or rather, why it works?

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Ok, lets start with the triangle \[A = b \times h \times \frac{ 1 }{ 2 }\] With A = area b = base h = height Now lets find the dimensions

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

http://prntscr.com/a6r73r Using what they gave us, we can determine the height of the triangle, which is basically 13 - 9 which is 4 :) h = 4in Now for the base, The base of the triangle is the base of the rectangle, which is given, right there. http://prntscr.com/a6r876 b = 21in A = b x h x 1/2 A = 4 x 21 x 1/2 A = 84 x 1/2 Area of the triangle = 42in

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Weʻre done with the 1st step, now we find the area of the rectangle. \[A = b \times h\] With A = Area b = base h = height http://prntscr.com/a6r91w With the given lengths, we have found the dimensions of our rectangle b = 21in h = 13in A = b x h A = 21 x 13 A = 273in

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Now we subtract the area of the triangle from the area of the rectangle Area of the figure = Area of the rectangle - area of the triangle Area of the figure = 273 - 42 Area of the figure = 231in

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

231in^2

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Let me know if you need any further help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks I understand I had to step away for a few minutes

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

All good ;P
