Does anyone have a pet turtle? Hello, I just got two baby turtles from China town. I'm aware that they give off a contagious disease ,but does the disease or whatever wear off when they're older? They're red turtle sliders ,and I kind of want to know what's essential to keep them healthy and happy. I know they need a light to keep them warm and a thermometer for their water. What should I feed them though? I do know they start as carnivores as babies although I'm unsure what's the proper diet for them. Any help?
The possible disease that turtles, birds, cats, and even dogs can transmit to humans is salmonella disease; though not always. Salmonella is is a gram negative bacteria; endotoxin; meaning a toxin that is present inside a bacterial cell and is released when the cell breakup/decay. Just make sure you wash your hand after handling the turtle. As it may cause Diarrhea ( sometimes severe) other symptoms include fever, chills, and abdominal pain. I love turtles, but i don't have one as a pet, so I had to google the proper food for your baby turtle "Pet red-eared sliders will feed on just about anything you give them, but I recommend feeding them a commercial turtle food or pellet to benefit proper growth and health." Please provide the appropriate equipment and supplies for the its home, as turtles are exothermic; meaning they will die if you didn't provide enough heat for them! They can't absorb heat from sun. Look up sources on google, they will really benefit you as a turtle pet owner. Good luck
Aw, thanks! I have been washing my hands thank goodness ,and I don't seem to have any symptoms. Is it fine if I feed them meal worms or something though? I don't exactly trust/ know what proper pellets to feed
yes you can. I looked it up onetime when I was about to get one. look at this source Red-eared sliders are omnivores. In the wild, they feed on aquatic vegetation, small fish and decaying material such as dead fish and frogs, etc. Pet red-eared sliders will feed on just about anything you give them, but I recommend feeding them a commercial turtle food or pellet to benefit proper growth and health. On occasion, you can offer them leafy greens, freeze-dried shrimp or krill, crickets, superworms I quoted this " On occasion, you can offer them leafy greens, freeze-dried shrimp or krill, crickets, superworms"
Ok, thanks for the help!
