OpenStudy (swaugh):

can someone check my answer ? Which of the sets of ordered pairs represents a function? (5 points) A = {(1, −5), (8, −5), (8, 7), (2, 9)} B = {(7, −4), (7, −2), (6, −3), (−9, 5)} Only A Only B Both A and B Neither A nor B-my answer

Mehek (mehek14):

Function: When each x-value has a different y-value

OpenStudy (swaugh):

like what do you mean different

Mehek (mehek14):

Example: you have the function: (1,-1) (2,-2) (3,-3) that's a function NOT a function: (1,-1) (1,-2) (3,-3) why is it not a function? because there is x = 1 twice and both have different y-values : -1 and -2

OpenStudy (swaugh):

im confused

Mehek (mehek14):

look at the first function any x values are repeated?

OpenStudy (swaugh):

no

Mehek (mehek14):

are you sure? i see 8 twice for x. . .

OpenStudy (swaugh):

no my new answer is yes

Mehek (mehek14):

oke so A can't be a function cuz 8 is there twice but the y-values are different how about B?

OpenStudy (swaugh):

maybe

Mehek (mehek14):

any x values repeating?

OpenStudy (swaugh):

yes

OpenStudy (swaugh):

7

Mehek (mehek14):

so can't be a function either

OpenStudy (swaugh):

so my answer was correct

Mehek (mehek14):

ye lol I just saw that you already chose an answer

OpenStudy (swaugh):

thank you

Mehek (mehek14):

yw :)
